I think the problem is the spread across the width. In the accepted version, the flag is just to the right of the tombstone (considering the horizontal dimension only, of course it is higher as well) and there is a fair portion of the train to the left. In the rejected version, the flag is more over the tombstone, doesn't stick out much to the right, and there isn't much train to the left (because it is farther back and so smaller). So the rejected shot has the main compositional elements in a much narrower range horizontally. And so you have dead space, especially along the left margin where there is also a distracting bit of tombstone cut off.
