Default Suggestions on shooting into the sun.

I can't seem to get these type of shots right. Is there some special filter or settings that I need to use to capture this correctly? There is a CSX ballast train in the bottom in each of these shots. It shows up if I completely overexpose the RAW file, but it's pure noise by that time. Maybe I was too far away from the subject?

Or is there some special process to get the train out, like dodging and burning? Layering? Suggestions?

The silhouette is of a Carbon Black plant in Tuscola, Il.
