I seem to recall a state, can't remember if it's in New England or in the deep South that has a law that says it's LEGAL to beat your wife on the county courthouse lawn on Sundays.
That law is still on the books in South Carolina I know. It also stipulates that the stick you beat your wife with can not be any bigger than your thumb. It comes from English Common Law if I remember correctly, and is also the basis for the saying "rule of thumb"
