The key to success in leveling wide angle lens shots is finding a vertical or horizontal in the middle of the image and leveling that.

Thus the call to level off the cab end or the hopper was right on. (If I may use a colloquialism from the 60's)

Wide angles distort the image at the edges and trying to level from there will cause you to chase your tail.
