Generally, an open door on a depopulated or a moving roster shot is really detrimental to the over all mise-en-scène.

In other words, it looks like crap. Like mustard hanging off your face in a fine restaurant on the first date.

However, in Joel's shot the train is stopped on the mainline and the crew is on the ground. Now the door has a good reason to be open and we are interested in the scene rather than being annoyed by having the aesthetics compromised.
