The older photo is surely inferior to the newer one. It depicts however pretty rare vehicle with a lot of human element, including fellow railfan. And it is one of my first railfanning photos. :)

If you like such shots, focus manually or use AF-lock feature to make sure that your object is in focus. When it is more than slightly out-of-focus, the photo is lost.

A note to my way to fix it: selective darkening of sky after enhancing contrast with curves enhances noise in the sky because the contrast-enhancing S-shaped curve compresses right (and left) parts...
