Why do you "need" a better lens? A "better" lens isn't going to give you better pictures if you don't figure out how to use the camera...

I swear by my 18-70 and am glad I got it. I used the "loaner" 18-55 mm for about a week and when I made the switch, I liked it instantly better. Granted, it is a bit heavier, but I manage to survive.

But then why not just keep the original file, and save the edited one (which I'm guessing will be smaller) as another JPG? There's not that much compression to make a noticeable difference there.
