favorite railroad

i was wondering ? what railroad is your favorite and why?

GMEMD 09-17-2009 09:39 PM

Railroad: Denver & Rio Grande Western
Why: EMD Locomotives, coolest paint scheme, the 3% Tennessee Pass.

Ahh, if only it was still around to see...

Freericks 09-17-2009 10:09 PM

Erie Lackawanna
Why: Closest to my childhood home and to my grandmother's house when I was a kid, besides, how cool did PAs and E units look in that re-used Lackawanna scheme? Lastly, what other railroad's name made the sound of a train passing if you just kept resaying it? Erie Lackawanna Erie Lackawanna Erie Lackawanna Erie Lackawanna Erie Lackawanna Erie Lackawanna

Ahh, if only it was still around to see...

CSX

Why? I grew up watching them, and the newer blue paint job gets me everytime (i like blue lol) The crews are friendly (atleast the ones i have met are) and its the closest railroad to where i live (right outside of baltimore, ive seen like everything here, BNSF, UP, CSX, NS, Conrail, many rentals, and as for the electric line nearby, Amtrak, NJT, CSX, NS, etc.)

TrainFanNZ 10-06-2009 01:30 AM

GMEMD IS SPOT ON.

D&RGW
Why: Best paint scheme HANDS DOWN! All EMD roster for mainline duties with ALCO switchers. Also operating 4-6-6-2 challengers.
The famous Tunnel Motor Coal drags to Phippsburg on same occasions. The world famous Rio Grande Zephyr from Denver to Salt Lake City & Ski Train from Denver to Winter Park.
But the main reason: Tennessee Pass, Moffat Tunnel, Soldier Summit, Royal Gorge, Glenwood Springs, Dotsaro CutOff, Big Ten Curve, Numerous other canyons & Gorge.

The EMD sound of Turbo's sounding from 10 locomotives climbing up passes, or rolling at floor level through canyons & gorges, will forever live on in my heart till I pass. This RR defind the odds, and ended being a popular RR with fans. I respect the D&RGW, for continuing with the Zephyr until 1981, whilst AMTRAK dominated the rest of the U.S.

Tennessee Pass, Moffat Tunnel & Soldier Summit . . . . . . . . . . Enough said!

My favorite would have to be CSX.

Why: Cause ive grew up watching them, Have many friends on with CSX.

Grand Trunk Western

Tracks were only a couple miles from my house growing up. Great paint scheme. Not to many GT engines left anymore as Canadian National is repainting them.

crazytiger 10-20-2009 05:41 PM

Union Pacific.

Why? See the OP in the BNSF v. UP thread.

lock4244 10-20-2009 10:51 PM

Right now, the Western New York and Pennsylvania RR. Why? Alco and MLW locomotives.

Favorite Railroad: Southern Railway

Why: Growing up this was the only railway around. The crews were always nice to us kids. Everytime my cousins and I would hear the train coming we would always race to the tracks behind grandmother's house and the crew would throw out candy to us. That's something I haven't forgotten. As for my favorite now I would have to say it's hard to pick between NS and CSX. I like them both.

Well, Michael, let me get this straight...

trainmaster_1 10-26-2009 06:52 PM

nah forget it

espeekiwi 12-04-2009 01:18 AM

Southern pacific.

as a kid i stood in aww with the hair on my arms and neck standing on end as a mixed goods frieght train climbed that hill. i still remember it as clear as yesterday.

sd45,sd40-2t,sd40-2t,sd40-2t,sd45,sd45,sd40-2t,sd40-2t......the mid train helper was 6 more tunnel motors and another 2 sd40's bringing up the rear.

there was more smoke on pass that day then a double header cab forwards convention...

since then i have been hooked and its something we'll never get to see again.

I like CSX because they run so much cool stuff you won't see anywhere else! Also UP is great because of the steam program! KCS has the coolest paint scheme and BNSF trusts the responsible railfans. CN, CP and NS are all nice, but these four really stand out, especially CSX and UP so these are my favorites.

Now for shortlines: I live in WNY, land of Alcos, so I like LA&L (the shortline parent of Mike Lockwood's WNYP), however I love the shortline parest Genesee Valley. The are always friendly and invite you into the cab, and I've gotten to know the crews up here over the years. I can even remember once I had a crew member stop the locomotive and then throttle up just in time for the shot they know I always take, producing a lot of smoke! Both shortlines have all-alco rosters.

Missabefan 12-04-2009 11:38 PM

Growing up in northern Minnesota I have to go with the former Missabe (DM&IR) Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway. Great looking paint scheme, friendly crews, and constant trains back and forth hauling iron ore pellets. Now CN ownes it and well..bigger is not always better.

The trains still run but most of the maroon paint is gone.

Definately the Missabe. I do not have a shot of a maroon unit leading a Missabe train in the database(although I do of the LSRM and MRHS's DM&IR #193 and #316) however you will never see a GE on the DMIR.

Hmmm, these sure do look like GEs to me.

Even CSX and UP:
[photoid=89930]

In fact, on my visit to the Missabe in 2004, the first train we caught was a southbound CN manifest led by a C44-9W at South Alborn.

SAL/ACL/SCL/CSX - because those were/are the railroads where I grew up or live now.

Andrew Blaszczyk (2) 12-07-2009 03:42 AM

I suppose Conrail would be my favorite since it is my "hometown" railroad and I've gotten to know some of the crews personally.

BadDog1270 01-27-2010 05:09 AM

The CNW it like a family run railroad and my dad worked for it

coborn35 06-15-2010 04:11 PM

Well nice try Chris but no cigar. All those trains you showed me were not Missabe trains, those were DWP trains. IL admit I forgot about the all rails but otherwise it is all EMD.

You are opening a thread last posted to on January 27 to argue a point made over 7 months ago on December 6?
