According to "recently made roster changes" on Bullsheet, 8536 and 8604 have been made from SD50-2s to SD50-3s. Any details on this?

Pretty much a complete rebuild, much like the NS SD40E rebuild program. The CSX units incorporate a Q-Tron microcpressor package which brings the units to DASH 3 standards (NS is using the EMD EM2000 microprocessor). The units are rated at 3000hp. CSX #8536 is the first such rebuild and last check showed it to still be at the Huntington Shops.

Huntington Shots did both of these units. A bunch of head hanchos on CSX were on scene during the release of the two rebuilds on Tuesday of last week.

Also, all of the CSX B30-7's and B36-7's will be retired within 90 days.

In general I am not an equipment chaser, not into that part of the hobby, but seeing any of the dash-7 units was always a pleasure; they are a favorite. I regret that I have never taken a B3x-7 shot good enough for RP, and few C3x-7 shots.

Maybe some equipment chasing over the holidays is in order. To heck with composition, roster/wedgie shots galore! :) Just get 'em!

Where did you get this information? As for their retirement, it is really sad. I never even shot one! I could see it coming though as none of them were getting YN3 and they weren't so busy they couldn't be fit in...

Chase,

This hobby is full of rumors. A lot are derived from, "I talked to a conductor at a siding." And as we all know that level of employee is rarely in on decision making.

I am not asking you to name the individual, but what I always want to know is what level of employee the info came from: such as trainmaster, road forman, division super or officer.

The only thing in all this is: is the "reliable source" a person who's job it is to know this information?

If i don't know this type of info the reliable source is not yet reliable.

This truly is the end, im going to be real sad to see them go. Those were my childhood engines that i grew up watching chug around the yards in Athens and a few lucky catches on the mainline. I knew it was coming for a long time but not a day i wanted to see come, they will be missed, another bit of variety gone.

I know the guy pretty well and I know his position with CSX, but I don't feel comfortable releasing it, just for his sake. His position definitely makes him worthy of knowing the status of locomotives and their futures.

I wouldn't worry too much! Did you happen to notice how long it took them to make the SD50-2s!? Imagine how long it'll take for them to do a rehaul! Nonetheless, being a 13 year old railfan that sits at the tracks with a bike every weekend, I'll miss them too. Recently read they'll be doing the same with SD40-2s too. They were the only company of GEVOS on priority assignments and hopefully with CSX investing so much into them they'll continue to do just that for many years.

Man! I feel like I just gave one of those speeches where I just want to break down and cry!:(

Saw SD50-3 8502 today as one of the units (3) on today's northbound juice train. Interesting thing about this unit, maybe all the ex-SBD SD50's they are rebuilding, is they plated over the nose light and installed a new light up between the numberboards. This was an easy way to determine which CSX SD50's were of SBD and which were of Chessie heritage. Usually the Juice train only has 2 units, dont know why it had 3 today, was 56 loads. The other 2 were ES44DC's in the 52xx series. Will try to post a pic later.

The additional locomotives were most likely added due to the fact that nearly 3' of snow fell up north. Sandpatch is still shut down. RF&P is just now beginning to run things.

Blah, the noselights are what made those units special, made it clearly a Seaboard unit. I dont know what the point of moving them is seeing that CSX was ordering noselights in their GEVO's till the 700 series. I suppose they also removed the hood mounted bell, great now i cant tell the difference between a SD50 and 60.

Not only did they change the location of the bell, but they replaced the bell with an electronic one, as seen below.

The only thing that comes to mind with me is that is would allow CSX to put their logo in a more visible position on the nose. I'm torn with these new rebuilds, as it means that
1-The SD50 series will be around much longer
2-They are ruining perfectly good looking engines!
