Bad croppi-wait what? It was accepted?

Now, granted this is probably the only photo of this paint scheme on the site, but...

Come on, couldn't they have at least told him to crop out the slide mount??

Chris Z 05-28-2011 08:55 PM

Whata ya mean? It makes for a very nice frame. You can hang it on the wall.

Every new upload from Jeremy Plant is more money in the bank. Ka-ching!

troy12n 05-28-2011 10:46 PM

That's pretty lazy that they couldnt crop out the slide frame.

It is most definetly NOT the only picture of that paint scheme. All CB&Q SD45's were delivered in that paint scheme and some other locomotives were repainted prior to the merger, not many though. I saw at least 1 GP35 painted in that. I dont think it was that rare.

Having battled numerous times to improve my (not so many) scanned slides, sometimes at the behest of a screener, sometimes to satisfy my own standards (not that strict, really), I do get a bit peeved when I see a shot get on with what I view to be insufficient effort made.

Leaving the slide frame on, geesh!

troy12n 05-29-2011 01:32 AM

Terrible looking sky too. All of your slide efforts I have seen have been leaps and bounds above that.

Edit: I just looked through all his photos and this appears to be the only one he left the slide mount in, I dunno why.

Joe the Photog 05-29-2011 04:50 AM

He's killing me! How could he do that? I don't mean leaving the slide mount in, I mean not putting in the reporting marks!

Most likely in on appeal, Cropping may have cut off the left side of the signal bridge. Don't know or care if its bad but not a great photo but interesting.

How so? Simply cropping along the inside edge of the "frame" would have resulted in the same exact image we see.

A few clicks of the clone tool in the corners and Voila!

milwman 05-29-2011 01:10 PM

We can assume he knows all that? Ether way a shot in the dark by me.

Knows all what...how to clone? Photoshop 101, and from the look of many of his photos, I'm sure he's doing at least SOME minor processing.

Yep Jim He maybe new at this and as he gets better maybe upload better copy of it? All just guess on my part. But if he knows how why wouldn't he fix it?

trainboysd40 05-29-2011 02:25 PM

Yes...new at it....with over 100 photos in the database...all from slide...

A lot of older guys take it slower then young ones do

nikos1 05-29-2011 03:16 PM

Looking at his other pictures its almost as if he forgot to process this one or something. Most of his other shots seem to be of far higher quality.

A 8 year old using MS Paint could have cropped that slide frame out properly. Considering all his other photos dont have it, I guess it's just an oversight on his part, but a screener let it in, so I guess we can blame them

Wizzo 05-29-2011 06:19 PM

Historically interesting it might be, but it really doesn't come up to the image quality standards required to normally get a shot onto RP - even for a slide of this age.

The thread on the slide collection has far higher quality pics and scanning/PS skills despite the original images being much older.

Not even bothering to crop the slide mount out is really not on.

Chris Z 05-29-2011 07:20 PM

I wonder if he just uploaded the wrong file by accident? I wonder if it was accepted to RP by accident?

Why does the contrast on this photo look so terrible?

troy12n 05-30-2011 12:03 AM

He should have shot it in RAW!

DWHonan 05-30-2011 01:05 AM

Let's not forget one of the site's very own Photo Submission Guidelines:

Quote:

If uploading a scanned image, please make sure you have cropped off all of the scan edges produced from scanning the image.

The frame and the lack of any correction lead me to believe he must have uploaded the wrong file.

What I don't understand is how it got accepted and why he hasn't gone in and replaced it with a photoshopped version.

Indecline 05-30-2011 07:11 AM

There are two standards on this place. If you kiss the ass you will get them on, if you don't you won't. I've submitted a few oldies, but moldies, that look a heck of lot better than some of the shit that has been accepted recently from the early 70's from certain members and they all have been rejected for bull shit reasons. Sorry, but I'm not going to waste my time scanning my crap from the 70's for here no matter how bad the shit they are accepting is. Fuck em.
