Some test shots
 

So I was riding the train to the Mariners game today (nothing like mixing trains and baseball). Anyhow, I tried a few interesting shots and wanted some feedback. They actually turned out better than I was expecting, considering they were taken with a pocket sized point and shoot and I was shooting through glass while zipping along.

I have two suggestions, in opposite directions. The blank pinkish area and the fence at the bottom don't add much for me - they take up space without complementing the subject. I would either reposition and recompose to get those out - that makes it a more abstract reflection - but you will have to get a bit higher or lower to get the train up off the bottom of the reflecting glass a bit. Or do the opposite, bring in more context, so that one can tell what the reflecting surface is. So the latter might entail a vertical to show more of the surrounding structure supporting the glass, or something else.

Let me guess....Along Elliott Way north of Broad St? That's some good material. I think you can do something with it! Good luck.

Photo 2 has changed and is now actually DIFFERENT than photo 1!

Some thoughts. Location 1 has more potential because in location 2 you will always have the problem of squeezing the train into the narrow strips as the wall is broken up by non-glass sections.

Light, light, light! You need light on the side of the train, otherwise the reflection does not seem to be strong enough for the train to "emerge" from the window.

I just reread and realize that you were on board! Now I understand better, and it explains the blur in the second shot. On the second one it does look like you could go there and shoot from the ground, facing away from the train as the train goes by. On the first, maybe too tight a squeeze, or just plain unsafe. Anyway, keep trying if you can!

I disagree here. I have seem lots of great window reflection opportunities, but I could not make any of them work because I always ended up getting my own reflection. Taking the reflection OF the train from ON the train solves that issue. The other thing that will not work by shooting from the ground is height, you are much higher up and can see more of the reflection from on the train.

I like the idea, a lot...but I'm not a big fan of these shots. I'm not quite sure what it is that I don't like about them. Maybe it is because some of the train or car is cut off or something like that. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea, I think it's great.

Thanks, I appreciate the input. These really were spur of the moment shots, I saw the reflection out the window and went for it (and then tried again on the return trip). Next time I hope I'll have my better camera and experiment some more.
