CSX's new CR Repaint procedure?
 
CSX recently painted CSX 8803 with a yellow nose and the CR remaining on the sides and Long hood. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/sho...spx?id=1813896 Did they do this to make it more visible, or to "stake their claim"? I know 8803 had an exceptionally farmered up nose, but will this become a regular thing with CSX?

i sure hope not, the ex conrail engines look wierd enough with the number change let alone a yellow nose that almost looks like wall paint.

I doubt this becomes a trend. Look at the older photos of this engine, it already had a solid blue nose. They must have decided to give it a yellow nose for more visibility. Also it looks like the Juniata Shop decal from this engine's Conrail days (unique to the 8803) is gone too.

Your wrong Andrew. It has to be something more to it. I wonder if the President of the United States has something to do with it? I heard his favorite color is yellow.

Actually, it's not. ORHS 471 was built in September 1950 as Maine Central 571, a high-hood GP7. Maine Central rebuilt the engine in 1985 with the unique cab and other modifications.

Roger is a pretty knowledgeable guy. ORHS claims it to be a GP7u.

Interesting. I was actually told by a member of the ORHS during the Buckeye Rails NRHS conference a few years back that it was a CF7. Oh well - I certainly stand corrected.

I just have to LOL at that picture, what I want to know is if that was some CSX employee having fun (making fun of conrail "quality") or if CR employees actually did it

Well its a different patch job from the usual you see on RP.net thats for sure.

I personally reckon that all Class I's should paint locomotives in Heritage paints like UPRR.
CP, CN, BNSF, CSX & NS could come up with sum nice looking engines, if they put their minds to it, but I'm not counting on them doing something like in the near future anyway! Just look at all the Fallen Flags that each Class I has . . . I can't wait to see a MILW, DMIR & PRR painted GEVO or EMD ACe on the point.

I saw 8803 last week leading 2 other SD-40s on a local sitting on the South Baltimore industrial track. Looks funny just having a yellow nose.

CSX has done this a few times in the past.
 
CSX has done this a few times in the past. About the time on the RF&P takeover they did this yellow nose job, to a Chessie unit that had RFP cab signals. I have photos of it leading trains on the RFP during the transition years.

If a unit needs paint and it is not set for a full repaint, what else are you going to paint it? CSX doesn't keep CR blue paint in stock.

Those yellow nose CSX patch jobs were very common in the early 90's after CSX went to the YN1 paint scheme, supposedly they did it for safety. Most every single CSX painted ghost got a (properly painted and lettered) Yellow nose on the short hood end, some (4 axle units mainly) got it on both ends, and they also applied it to lots of the gray SBD and Family Lines painted units as well, even an L&N unit or 2 got it, maybe even a Clinchfield or SCL unit got it. About the only thing that escaped was that SBD painted GP38-2 which was only recently painted in YN3.

Hate to bust any bubbles, but its been in YN3 for a few months now. Looks alot nicer although the ditchlights still make it an oddball.
